The only sure fire way to tell if it's an Impala or Caprice is to check the VIN numbers. The VIN number has to have WX3 in it to be a real Impala.

They only made the Impalas from '94-'96.

They only came in three colors:Black(BBB aka Big Black Beast), Green(DGGM aka Dark Green Grey Metallic), and Maroon(DCM aka Dark Cherry Metallic).

Some Caprices made during '94-'96 do have the same motor and transmission as the Impala. But, the suspension is softer than the Impala, the body color is different, the grill is different, the wheels are different(15's), different brakes, and the interior is different(either vinyl or cloth).

The Caprices were made longer than the Impalas, from '91-'96. But, all of them before '94 have side skirts on the rear fenders.

As I stated above, some of the Caprices came with the same motor as the Impala, but most of them came with a smaller V8 engine.

That's about the bulk of it. There's more, but this is the basic. Oh, and the impala came with the truck spoiler which the Caprice didn't have.

I'm going to assume you mean the top of a 62 Impala, right? Early '62s had the 1961 type top with a lot of glass. Later '62s had the 'convertible top look' with more metal on the sides behind the rear side roll up windows where the top mates to the rear quarter panels. The bubble top cars let too much sun in for comfort. They are either one or the other. There is no faking a bubble top. All that glass gives them away. It made them heavier, too.

Check the VIN at the site I've cited as a source. Chances are, even if it is a "clone" of an Impala, the VIN tag won't have been changed. If it looks as if the rivet that holds the VIN has been tampered with, then in all probability it has and you're looking at a phoney Impala.

The VIN tag should have some sort of code designating whether your car is an Impala or a BelAir. Do your homework. Lots of info out there if you just look for it.
