The interviewer asked, 'in 60 seconds, list all the uses for a brick.' What is the purpose? Is it creativity, number of things, something else?

So is there any right way to "win"? For example, is the most uses the best, or the most creative, or some quasi in-between?

to see how quick you are on your feet and making decisions as well as your ability to pull your own knowledge

It shows the agility of your mind if you can only come up with a couple of ideas and they require someone with a quick mind who can think on his feet then you may the be the guy they need. Have you ever been in a conversation with a person who needs 20 seconds to form a thought its very annoying and I doubt would be good in many jobs.

I ask the question in interviews to observe the interviewees though process where their mind wanders. I also shows how a person thinks on their feet in a pressure situation. It shows alot because there are so many different directions that you can go with the question.

To determine how your thought process works and of course creativity to come up with answers. It tells your personality how you answer to certain things too.

It proves how inventive and creative you are. It also shows the interviewer how quickly you can think "on the fly".

Most HR people are jerks who love the perceived power they think they have. Most love torturing the applicant with dumb questions that have nothing to do with the job they are applying for.

One of your answers should have been "throw it at people who ask worthless questions that do not pertain to my ability to do the job in the real world."

If he/she are building contractors than maybe it would be appropriate to look at it in a concrete fashion, but in general I would think they are trying to see how creative you could be.

It is a test to see if you can work under a deadline and how you perform under stress.

to see how creative you are. to see if you can think on your feet. to see if you can think outside of the box. to rate your intellegence compared to other applicants.
