This question is going to replace "Why is the Sky Blue" as the most asked question in the Earth Sciences & Geology forum. If you really want to know the answer you decide which part of the Rocky Mountains (they stretch from northern New Mexico to Alaska, and the magnetic declination changes dramatically over that distance) you are interested in and look at a contour map of that area. Magnetic declination (for that area and for the year published) are always given on contour maps.
