A lot of laptops have built-in microphones. If yours has one it will show in advanced sound properties. You can use Sound Recorder (Start/All Programs/Accessories/Entertainment) to test it. If the quality is OK for you then it cost you nothing. If you want more control, Audacity is great.
If you don't have a microphone, they are inexpensive and there should be a jack for it on the side of your laptop.

You need a microphone that works with your laptop and a recording software.
Audacity is a great recording/editing software
Its a 3.16MB file download (not big)
It's either audacity.com or google Audacity
