Ancestry.com is probably the most thorough site out there, but there is a charge for it.
You can look up ancestors who came through Ellis Island for free at the official website (http://www.ellisislandimmigrants.org/). I even found photos of the ships my great-grandparents came over on.
You can also get some information, including access to the social security death index, for free from the Mormon Church at the website http://www.familysearch.org/. There is family tree software available there as well.

No there isn't (that I know of), but you can start your own. Check out myfamily.com. You and your family members can register with this site (free) and everyone can contribute to buliding your family tree. Excellent web site.

I have done this but don't send money, usually all you get are Cd's with names and SS# of dead people with the same last name. Best is to start by talking to the oldest living relative and find where your ancestors are buried. Go to the cemetery and get records from them. Then if you know what country of origin you are from find the town and they will be great help because the records are usually found in the churches.

I believe there is. You may need to do some leg work, but if you are really into it you can find just about anything on the Web. You may find that your last name will match allot that don't really matter to you. You do need information up front to get started. Good luck.
