It sounds like you've made your decision already. If you dont like your job but you need money, quiting and being broke is not an option.
Just keep looking for another / better opportunity, who is to say that the next job you have is not better than working at the gas company. Im sure your co-workers will not feel hurt if they wish you the best, and if the best is moving on they should be happy for you.
I personally love my job but there are many times when i feel like haivng some relax time.
Job = money = happiness, if you believe in that then you must continue working otherwise go do something else in your life.

That's perfectly natural to feel that way. I bet you been there for a long time and you know the job inside and out. The people are great because they share the hate of the job with you and you all just try to get by, am I right? I've been there, what I did was finally got a new job, settled in and did what I had to do to make more money. I like the people here and when you get a new job you'll meet new people and after alittle bit everything will be okay again. You can still go by your old job to say hi or go out for drinks but you will not be happy until you move on. Trust me. Do whats best for you.
Good luck

The best time to find another job is when you still have one.
Doing your job well isn't always about whether or not you LIKE it. Sometimes, it's about having integrity to do everything to the best of your ability. Don't let poor wages weigh in that. Integrity is a precious commodity; One that your future employers would value greatly; One that will help YOU to value yourself highly and sleep well at night.
Life moves people together and it moves them apart. This can hurt, but just think of all the wonderful people you have yet to meet. Maybe this is leading you to them.

Just because you like the people there doesn't mean you should stay there. We all have to walk away from people we care about when the time comes for us to move on. Accept that you will become more unhappy in this job the longer you stay there, and you will have to move on eventually. The longer you delay, the longer you have to endure this job that you hate, and the more difficult it will be for you to leave those people behind.

Do you mean what would I personally do or what should a person do?
If I had no dependants I would leave right away. Life is too short to be unhappy or unproductive and you can find good friends and collegues anywhere.

You'll do whatever it is you make up your mind to do .
When you realize it is possible to accomplish whatever you set your mind to do , you'll be able to follow through . Hopefully , you'll line up that better job before you quit the old one .
