I seriously doubt conflict diamonds are worth millions of people being brutally murdered and having their hands chopped off and their lives torn apart.. but ok.

The movie's base about the conflict is very accurate and diamonds, as shown in the movie, signify much more to people than just something to wear. It's almost a goal they have to achieve so that they can get basic necessities that people take for granted everywhere.
I know for a fact because the Kimberly Process they talked about at the end of the movie was a bill I urged Senators to pass. It's very possible, though, that a diamond gets in here or there where it is a "blood" diamond, but ever since the Kimberly Process has been established, the chances are fortunately decreasing.

Obviously the parts that aren't true are the same parts that weren't true in any historical docudrama (Titanic, and so on), the characters, and love story.

I think the basis of the movie is very accurate, if it wasn't they wouldn't put little blurbs at the end of the movie about how you can help stop the sale of coflict diamonds.

pretty accurate... people smuggle drugs and mexicans in to US all the time, and neither of those are worth nearly as much as diamonds... so you would think that smuggling diamonds would be worth the trouble...
