A. By referring to it as appropriate affection, it can't be, by definition, inappropriate. But the term is too vague to correctly judge. What sort of affection are we talking about?

B. It depends on the situation and the class. A list of test scores is comparing one student's work to another, but I don't think that's inappropriate. Stating something along the lines of "Why can't you be more like _________." would be inappropriate.

C. Absolutely not. My students last year found out I have a wicked sense of humour and would joke about anything with them. This year I haven't joked around with any classes - I'm waiting until they show me that they're ready to be joked around with.

D. Depends on the note, the frequency, etc. At Christmas, I gave each of my students a note telling them why I appreciated having them in my class. If I was singling out one student and doing it on a regular basis, that may be inappropriate.

For A, no. "Appropriate affection" by definition cannot be "inappropriate."

For B, it's inappropriate to name names, but it's acceptable to compare students when anonymity is maintained.

For C, it depends on the subject and severity of the joking, as well as the context.

For D, seems appropriate to me.
