This was reported on Yahoo.com:

"Marshall Islands declares emergency as water runs out"
Source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070321/sc_afp/marshallsdrought_070321034320

I need an explanation here.

How can they be out of drinking water if they are surrounded by an ocean? Couldn't they drink the ocean water?

This is so hilarious! An island that is surrounded by water is "out of water!"

Umm...they have an "unlimited" source of water!

I think they might also be out of some "common sense." Geez! Can't believe this news made it onto Yahoo!'s frontpage!

You can't drink ocean water, you'll kill yourself. Too much salt for your body. I'm guessing that they ran out of well water from their drought to desalinize. It makes perfect sense. Also, you can't water crops with ocean water or else you'll salt the land killing everything and ensuring that you can never grow anything there again.

Water water everywhere, but not a drop to drink. As I am sure that you are aware, it takes expensive sophisticated desalination machinery to turn ocean water into drinking water. The Marshalls normally use rain catchments to get much of their water, and actually use the runway in Majuro to catch water. On many of the outer islands people live in palm huts and sleep on mats. They have no way of desalinating their water. The Marshallese people are wonderful, loving, generous people. I hope they get rain soon.

Unfortunately, they can't drink sea water. Maybe some rich country will build them a desalizination plant like many of the arab countries like Dubai use.
