In England, the exchange of contracts takes place often at the pace of the fastest solicitor. Keep onto your firm of sols., and look forward to probably a month, or six weeks delay, whilst all sorts of searches and exchanges are going on!
When you finally complete, then you are usually secure and legally bound!

Did you put an acceptance date on the contact? What is the date the other party has to sign by. There should have also been a close date on the contract. that will be driven by work load, title searches, surveys, and mortgages if there are any.

It really depends on the transaction and the chain.

I used to work for a solicitor and we'd have a signed contract on file ready for exchange but we'd still be ironing out details.

Prepare to make lots of phone calls!

Should be fine. It does take awhile, but now that you have paid the deposit, there is no fear of gazumping. That's great news! Congratulations on your new flat. Getting on the ladder is hard, but now that you're there, hopefully you'll have made a good investment.
