You join (or affiliate with) a political party by checking that party's box on the voter registration application form. If you checked "decline to state" when you registered and now wish to affiliate with one of the parties you must re-register by filling out a new voter registration application and checking the box of one of the political parties. You may change your party affiliation at any time by re-registering.

You send in a membership card, and some requirement payment of a membership fee. Or you just declare that you support that party.

Changing parties is like changing your favorite song. You just declare a new party. For politicians, it's harder, becuase they actually have membership benefits and endorsements.

But Lieberman did it in the 2006 Connecticut mid-terms, when he lost the Democractic primary. He changed parties, created a new party, and went on to win the senate race.
