My son will be 5 months in 6 days. Since he was underweight when he was born, I focussed a lot on him having to drink his milk. He on the otherhand hated to eat. He can go hours without a feeding and not let out a cry and will just sleep if I dont give him anything. He absolutely does not care for hunger.

So in order for him to drink his milk, my family and I would spend time showing him toys, singing songs and then he would drink his milk. Now he does not take his bottle without toys that interest him. We keep showing him different things. He will soon be going to daycare and I am worried what is going to happen.

Any idea why he is so uninterested in drinking his milk? Please advice what I can do to break this habit and make him drink his milk. I really want to change this habit. I know its my fault to have done it in the first place but I did not have any other options.

He is otherwise active, plays a lot. He is completely on breastmilk in a

That's odd that he doesnt respond to hunger. If hes growing right then its probly not a problem. But if it is a problem, talk to his pediatrician and ask for advice.

Most babies would eat if they got hungry enough but since he was underweight I understand the focus. Is he still underweight? If not, I wouldnt worry so much. Maybe before you starts the daycare try this at home: you could stop doing the toy thing for a few days and track how much milk he drinks. I would guess after a day or so it would be back to normal.( I wouldnt start any solids right now)
If he is healthy and growing he wont go hungry. He will let you know! If this doesnt work and he isnt drinking what he usually does I would talk to his dr

Well the only thing I can say is just teach him another way to eat. It will take will power on your part not to give in but when feeding just hold him in your lap and try to give him the bottle if he doesn't want it try again later. Eventually he will figure it out. Babies are quite intelligent. Also a strict routine will help, for example breadfast the same time everyday as well as lunch and so on. If he is on solids then try him in a booster sit at the table with you rather than a high chair away from you. If he does not want to suck have you checked for an ear infection?

He shouldn't be drinking cow's milk at this stage - if he is, then it may the issue.
If this is breast milk you're talking about, then you can try altering your diet and see how he reacts - everything you ingest "flavors" the breast milk and he may just not be liking the taste of what it is that you're eating. If you're diet hasn't changed and this is something that's just arisen then don't worry too much - he will eat when he's hungry. Maybe he's turned off because you are so focused on getting him to drink?

I wish I could read the rest of what you started saying about being completely on breastmilk.

I have never heard of this. Is he growing and thriving? What does your doctor say about his disinterest in eating. If you haven't, I would consult your pediatrician. I can see why you are worried about daycare. He might not necessarily get the individual treatment that his specific case requires. Maybe if you could find an individual to baby sit who would be willing to go the extra mile he needs?

Generally new mothers worry more than they should. Babies eat when they want, and how much they want. He will gain weight, and he will be fine. You don't have to coax him to eat. If he doesn't want to drink, then don't make him. Believe me, eventually he will eat (I don't mean that in a mean way). Trust your baby. 3-4 hours between eating is fine. Good luck to you and your son!
PS If you are seriously worried and he is putting on no weight then see a doctor, but from what you said he is active and thriving. I think you're worrying too much.

maybe you can try giving him his milk in a sippy cup or a different bottle that might interest him more than the one he has... I think it's best for him to be on breast milk and you are doing the best thing for him by giving him your milk.. just keep trying different things and don't give up...

i don't think its your fault.........have you spoke to his doc concerning this, it sounds like it could be more serious than you think. children should feel hungry and enjoy drinking their bottle.
as for daycare - you will be amazed at what they can get your child to do that you can't. that is also not your fault lol kids just know how to work parents.

Is he tongue-tied?

Can he stick his tongue out past his lips?
Can you lift his upper lip up and away from his teeth as much as you can yours (gently, not to the point of causing pain)
