I guess that is a good question:) Why not the up and down Poles? I guess (more than guess) it is because of magnets and the fact that we call the different ends of magnets north and south. Magnets have been used as compasses for direction for so long that terms have become interchangable.
the South Pole is the direction the south pole end of a magent points.

We need two sex for generation of man kind. Like sex will fight and opposite sex will attract. Same way we need two opposite magnetic pole to get mechanical movements. It is all you can say gods creation. But I don't believe in gods.
