Actually, they are called slipcases, and basically they are just to enhance the packaging. Some have cool effects like holograms and stuff like that. Depending on the film, they're actually worth having, sort of like an incentive for collectors because they only seem to last for a limited time only. So I wouldn't write them off as useless, but more so a bonus for those that really care about their DVD collections.

I agree.Also if I pay 20 dollars for a DVD I want a damn inlay book or something in that plastic case by God.

To justify charging you $19.99 or more for a $0.25 DVD.

DVD's and CD's are painfully cheap to produce....they have to make their money somewhere!
