Has anyone paid to submit a story to an online writing contest? - or paid for an online critique?

If so do you remember the site's URL?

I completely agree with the previous answer.

I will not submit any stories or poetry anywhere that has a reading fee. There are plenty of free contests out there, and I also submit my work to magazines and journals for possible publication. All it costs me is the postage, paper, and envelopes! Writer's Market and Preditors and Editors are my sources for these:

As far as paying for critiques, I have no proof that anyone on the web is qualified to give me helpful feedback. For that, I rely on friends and on a real-life writing group that I know. However, for free feedback I have gotten excellent results from http://www.writing.com and I would recommend that. You can pay for improved membership, but the free one worked well for me. The community is great at giving helpful responses, no money required!

Happy writing!

If you go to Preditors and Editors, you will see that they oppose contests that charge a fee. As for paying for an online critique, never heard of that - that's a new scam to me. How do you know the person is qualified to do that critique. Read the complete site at Preditors and Editors. They tell you which contests are legit and which arent. Save yourself a lot of money and hassle and read before you submit anything to anyone without reading Preditors and Editors. Pax - C.
