I define love thus:

The will to extend one's self for the purpose of nurturing one's own or another's spiritual growth.


The thing most people get mixed up with is that love is actually quite different from the "falling in love" sensation.

Love, as defined by Scott Peck or Steven Covey (author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) is an active process that you choose to initiate. Falling in love is a biochemical state of your brain associated with a collapse of your boundaries and a very nice feeling that eventually goes away. The falling in love bit goes away. It's the love bit that continues on for years and years.

Note that it is important to love yourself as well as other people.

Love (emotion) defined as a chemical imbalance where the need to be and belong over ride ones common sense for self preservation.

Or:

Love (decision) defined as ones ability to commit to another, person or item, beyond any found imperfections or short comings.

Basically, your loving someone and being "in love" with someone are two entirely different things. You'll need to continue to love them (decision) long after the love (emotion) wears off, and believe me, it will. The best part is when you take the time to form a friendship before committing to a relationship. This almost guarantees a successful long term partnership.

The best definition of love that I have ever heard is "doing what is best for the other person." Notice that the verb is "doing" and not "thinking". Love is an action verb.
