We work in the same company, but not the same floor. We have had lunch together where there appears to be flirtation and mutual interest, but the problem with hanging with work colleagues is that you never know if they're being reserved because they are uninterested/taken, or if they're just being cautious because you work at the same firm. How can I figure out if he has a girlfriend without asking him? In my experience asking does not really yield honest answers, and there really is no subtle way to find out. Tricks like "Does your GIRLFRIEND like movies too?" or "What do you do with your weekends?" are strictly for kids and are very transparent. Any tips?

Be honest tell the person how you feel and tell the person you would like to take him/her out on the town.

Ask someone you know that works on the same floor as him, but won't tell him you asked. If he had lunch with you then later appeared "reserved" he may be having second thoughts about letting the relationship go any farther because he's already taken. The smart thing for you to do is to wait for him to make the next move. If he's really interested in you and is free to pursue you, he will do so. Don't wind up being the other woman. Adultery sucks.

With the weekend topic..maybe you could ask him on a friday what he is going to do over the weekend or if he has any special plans. Maybe then he will bring up a girlfriend. But if not, then try to make small talk and act interested. This may get his attention. If he is spending time with you and seems to be flirting, then he may not have a girlfriend. But if later you do find out he has a girlfriend and he IS "flirting with you" maybe he isnt the type of guy you should be interested in.

Those types of digging questions are rediculously transparent but that can be a good thing if you can carry it off. It's cute when you say it in a voice that implies you are digging, acknowledge the childish nice by stressing the fact you are aware of how stupid it sounds.

That's a tough one. How about getting him out of the workplace. Plan something outside of work. Maybe go for Happy Hour drinks after work. Or something outdoorsy. Hiking or biking. Then maybe you will be able to see his true colors.
