Fascinating is a describing word; more commonly known as an adjective. An adjective is, as a rule, put in before or after a subject or an object to describe how intriguing, wonderful, or interesting that thing is or was. To put it into a sentence, first we put it in a simple sentence, one with one subject and one predicate:

This book is fascinating, or
This is a fascinating book.

Or to be Yoda-like,
Fascinating this book is. (and it's not wrong! Can you believe that?)

Fascinating may not mean well all the time. A thief such as the charming Lupin can be fascinating and thieving at the same time. The Book of Shadows (for instance, if it exists) is fascinating also, albeit concerned with witchcraft.

All in all, fascinating is a versatile word, but can sometimes be misappropriated or misused, especially in conversations:

I find these butts (any butts) fascinating.

This sentence may be grammatically sound but it isn't politically (or sexually) right to some people. Be careful how you use the word. Interpretation is important. Why, Lord Voldemort is fascinating, so is The Dark Arts, but they're evil and spooky, right?

I hope this helps.
