Horseback Riding.
Yep!
Horseback riding has been used for therapy for children and adults with muscle and developmental difficulties / disabilities for years. Riding forces you to use balance to convey to the animal which way to go, how fast, to stop, to turn, to stay on, and other non-verbal commands. It's also great psychologically. You're out in the fresh air enjoying life and getting great exercise!
It is also a good idea to have lessons thru a professional trainer (can go in groups to save $) to learn proper body mechanics both on & off machines and build up your abdominal muscles, thereby building up your back muscles. The stronger the abs, the stronger the back.

As soon as we are financially able, my hubby and I plan to purchase land to build on, raise a couple horses. The horses will be psy therapy for me and physical therapy for Patrick. He is 100% disabled from a stroke 5+ yrs ago, and the riding would help him to better develop his balance and strength.

Give it a try!

Oh yeah.....I had therapy many times for auto accidents, fractures, and i worked as an assitant. One good exercise is balancing on each foot one at a time. Stand on one foot near something you can grab for balance if need be, for about 15 seconds, working your way to a few minutes, as your foot/leg muscles get stronger. Each time you "wobble' the little balance 'corrector' muscles work. Do the same on each foot.

I have broken my back and a lot of other bones too. I practice doing what officers do if they pull someone over for suspected DWI: standing on one leg with the other 6 inches off the ground, walking ten paces foot over foot, etc. It may sound crazy, but I do practice these and they are simple---don't need to purchase a video---just watch Cops episodes on TV.

We do this take a seat and stand recreation at senior health. None folks find it irresistible in any respect. We wouldn't have a desk to hold directly to even though and after we take a seat we must carry our legs up, placed them down, then stand, then take a seat, repeat. It additionally works your middle. One recreation we do for steadiness is stand immediately with one foot in entrance of the opposite, fold our hands throughout our chest, near our eyes and depend to twenty. It most commonly takes train a couple of instances to get it correct and of direction you can actually begin out with five-10 seconds and construct as much as extra.'

Buy or rent a yoga video or attend a yoga class. Yoga is a low-impact workout that can help your balance tremendously.

Your physical therapist should be working with you on that.

Also you need to consult with your physician first, as you may be unable to perform certain types of physical activities.

It is much safer for you to consult with them instead of looking for answers on yahoo.
