it's not the subject. the subject is the person or thing that is *doing*. in this sentence the phrase *Joe and I* is the subject.

it's not a verb. a verb is the *doing* word. ie *wanted*

it's not the object of a preposition either. that's what comes after a 'directional' word, like to, from, of, under etc. in this sentence *pizza* is the object of the preposition *of*.

so...

it's the direct object.

you want the last piece.

*the last piece* is the object of your desire :)

C
To find a direct object, you must find the verb and ask the questions "whom" or "what".
Q. Both Joe and I wanted what?
A. The last piece

You didn't underline anything, so it could be any of the above.
To be correct, however, the sentence should read: "Joe and I each wanted the last piece of pizza."

a-subject

"piece" isn't a verb or an obj. of a preposition

it isn't a direct object because wanted is an intransitive verb
