ASL is American Sign Language--it is the primary sing language used by the deaf community in the United States. Its also the oldest--dating back to the founding of the first schools for the deaf in the 1820s.
It is NOT the same as "Signed English" which is simply signs for words in English. ASL is a distinct language (and recognized as such by the Modern Language Association) and has its own grammer and structure.
