Because I don't know how old you are, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt, and I'm actually going to answer this thing. First, to date, no one has even seen a real mermaid that has absolute proof. The early Europeans found what they thought were Mermaids, and found them to be, unfortunately for them, Manatees. The movies about them are as real as movies like Monsters, inc. Mermaids are legends, like a lot of other legends, they come from wild imagination that way way back, people sometimes let get the better of them. Sorry, unless there's irrefutable proof from a reasonable source, no, there's no such thing as mermaids, beyond what you see in movies and books.

Why not? Maybe there were Mermaids at one point in history, we may never know. But then again, think about the people who were alive back then, do you think if they saw something far off that looked vaguely like a Mermaid that possibly they assumed it was and created the whole entire beast from their minds. Also consider the source, ancient people were kings of tall-tales and story-telling. Maybe they made it all up to explain the "unexplained", or maybe they were spot-on and we humans now of days are just close-minded?
I believe that most, if not all sitings of "mermaids" are really dolphins and such, but I could be entirely wrong.
