why does government impose import restriction?

List the main import restrictions apart from tariffs and Quotas

Tax it to raise revenues
Tax it to make it more costly and get it's price in line with domestically produced goods..keep it competitive, level the playing field
Tax it to discourage it's consumption
Tax it if it moves or breathes, if it doesn't breath, then it is dead....so go tax its children! I don't agree with trade protection. I do agree with embargo's.
We try to protect homeland industries.
We try to protect infant industries.
We try to save American jobs
We try to exert political pressure on other countries this way
We try to stop dumping and other unethical practices
We try do control our dependence on adversarial partners
We have to consider national security and defense compromised by trade
