After I filled up my tank I drove 2 miles down the road and then my car stopped accelerating, it became really shakey and then died. For a while it I couldn't get it to start up again. After I let it sit for a few minutes then it would start but it was still very shakey and making a loud knocking noise. Does it sound like I have water in my tank or does it sound like something else?

Water In Gas Tank Symptoms

I do not know for sure what is wrong with your vehicle. Water in the gas tank could be the problem. If you did get water in your gas tank it wouldn't hurt the car, the car would miss or choke as you called it. I would take your car to a mechanic and have them check it out. I don't think water would make your car do that. You'd have to get alot of water to make your car shut off like you said. You could just have bad gas in it too. Not saying that the gas station screwed you out of your money, but some vehicles don't run well on some gas. I've noticed that with my truck. It's done the same thing you're talking about. Just drive for a few more days. Change the gas in it. If it continues not running right take it to the mechanic

You may have water in the tank, since water is denser than gasoline. it would settle to the bottom of the tank and be drawn into the engine before gasoline is. Look at the exhaust pipe while the engine is running and see if water is dripping out more than normal condensation. The only fix is to open a gas line near the tank and drain the water out.

The symptoms could very well indicate water in the fuel. it could also be other things, however. Customarily, you will need to drain the fuel tank, allow it to dry and refill with good gasoline. If it's a modest amount of water, there are drying products on the market - check at your local auto supply store. Good luck!

Quite possibly, I wonder if other people are having the same problem? With all the alcohol in the gas now days, the water and the alcohol should blend together and help you ge it out. You can go to an auto store and buy some fuel cleaner and pour that in and see if it helps.

God luck
