I work with a small publishing / communications house in the pacific northwest. Most of our writing revenue is from "corporate writing" which is mostly employee newsletters, marketing copy, annual reports, white papers, etc.
Those of us that work as writers here do a significant amount of magazine writing on the side that can be very lucrative. Some articles in travel publications can fetch as much as $4.00 a word!
Still, doing this for a living requires a significant amount of dedication, determination and highly honed skills.
One of the odd results from working full time as a writer (at least for some of us here) is that it has ruined casual reading to a fair degree. You end up reading articles -- say from the Sunday paper's magazine section -- with a critical eye to the writing.

Writing is my "life", it has never made me a living. I don't know if I would ever really be good enough, but I have been vigorously published and have done public speaking. I don't know, one day I may get it together and I don't like to write unless it is something that I like to write so that is another sticky for me. I have used it a lot to advance my own personal agenda's, my causes, and my recovery. It is true and it is sad sometimes I am not so good with my grammar, but mostly always understandable unless I am very tired.

Largely. Not as an author: I write about art, write grants, letters for donations/thanks for donations; press releases at an NPO. I'm in education & outreach, but there's always plenty of writing jobs one can take on.
