I have 3 Mbps AT&T DSL, but our modem broke. It is a SpeedStream 5100b. It seems to keep locking up or crash etc. I've tried rebooting it several times, and it seems like the modem is dead. It looks like I need to get a new modem. Our connection speed is 3008kbps down/ 512kbps up. I would like to know what modems work and I would like to spend the least amount of money possible while still getting a good and reliable modem. I don't need wireless support since I already have a wireless router. Thanks.

We got the modem from the ISP, but they checked and it is not under warranty anymore. We called the ISP, and they told us we could either buy theirs or go to a local store and buy one, and they didn't specify which ones would work.

I strongly reccomend you contact AT&T technical department for assistance in selecting a modem which is fully compatable with their service. Often an ISP will use a certain type of modem and customers have a choice of buying one they provide or going to a local electronics store and buying one there. My step daugher had such a choice, and the one her ISP was offering was priced at fifty dollars. We went down to Fry's Electronics to price the unit they told us we could use instead of theirs and it priced out twenty five dollars more than theirs.

A second consideration in selecting either the ISP modem or a different one at an electronics store is that an ISP may provide technical assistance on theirs but not on a unit bought seperately. So, as the price for her ISPs modem was less than one at Fry's Electronics, AND she could receive technical assistance with theirs, we adviced her to buy her ISPs Modem.

After you contact your ISP and find out what your choices are, you can make an informed decision regarding which modem to purchase.

Good luck and have a great day!

P.S. Is the modem you currently own from your ISP or one you purchased seperately? If it is from your ISP, find out if it is still under warranty and if so they should replace it for free. Our ISP doesn't give us a choice on modems, we have to use theirs, but we also get it replaced for free if it goes bad. We actually rent our modem, it is not owned as it also brings our TV and phone service. See, each ISP has different methods of providing modems to customers, so it is important you contact yours to discover your options.

I would contact your isp and ask them which ones they support/recommend that way you aren't going out there purchasing a modem and finding out that it won't work with your service.
