Do a scavenger hunt. Everyone loves them.

You can make the items as easy or hard to find as you'd like to, and you can even have separate lists for kids and adults, and they'll still be doing the same thing.
Or you could give each immediate family a list and they could work as a team. If you'd rather not pair off families that already spend time together, you could section people off into groups and make your teams that way.
You could even make a family Olympics out of it and add on other activities, such as a potato sack race, a pie eating contest and any other number of things.

I didn't have alot of money for my sons birthday party, so he actually asked if his 5/6 year old friends could bob for apples and I thought, "oh my gosh, this is going to be my ultimate embarrassment!" I didn't think they'd want to do it, cuz I had been to their parties.... the parents went all out with themes, the whole bit. I got each child a large water gun as a gift and that was it. Well, these kids could have boobed for apples all day long. Then when they got the water guns they went outside and ran around played and I didn't have to do anything, but sit and watch and laugh. One of the kids came up and said this was the best party he had ever been to. It really was fun! And cheap. We're going to do it again this year. Only this time, I am going to feel good about it!

Pirate Ship!
Amount of people: any (the more the better)
Ages: any (might need to help like pre-Schoolers)
Ok I am going to try to explane this as best as I know how?
The game is like elimination...there is one person who is the caller!!
The one person one is swap the deck: pretend to mop
The two person one is Light house (2 people stand facing eachother and hold there hands out so that they can touch and they touch hands and spin in a circle and say "beep beep")
The three person one is drowning man: two people hold hands and one person gets in the middle of the arms and says help I'm drowning and waves their hands in the air!
The 4 person one is row boat: Is where 4 people get in a line and smoosh together as close as they can and pretend to row a boat and all together sing "row row row your boat"
The 5 person one is eating the grub: It is where five people huddle in a circle and wave there arms in an eating motion!
OK so now all that will make since..hopefully! :-D
everyone stands around, in no particular order, and the caller will say swab the deck...so everyone will "sawb the deck (pretend to mop)" then in random order the caller will call out one of the 5 things (light house, drowning man, rowboat, or eat the grub) when they call something say they call out light house everyone in the group has to find a partner put their hands together and turn in a circle and say aloud "beep beep" so everyone has to scramble and find a partner...if they do not find a parner the have to "walk the plank" (in other words there out..and they have to stand out of the playing area..and they have to sing YO HO a pirates like for me, the object is, that once a large number of people who get out they have to sing LOUD and the object is for them to get loud enough that the people that are still playing won't be able to hear the caller calling out the "play")
IN the end you will only have 1-2 players and they are the winners!
oh and between every "call" you have to call "swob the deck" Because it gives the people who are out a chance to get to the designated spot and the other people a chance to take a breather because it is a VERY tirering game!!
I hope you understand this and that if you do deside to play this that it goes over well!!! :-D

Games like Scene it or Clue are fun. Also, Ice Skating/Rollerblading and Bowling are fun. It really depends on the group. But any of those would be fun.
