No, you are NOT wrong and you are VERY correct. The problem is the record labels. They like to thrust and oversaturate the radio stations with weak music, and repatedly use a fancy or provacative video visuals to MAKE people like the song/artist. Most artists are forced to water down the musician they really are to be successful. If they don't, the record label WILL NOT promote them.

Think about it, when Nelly Furtado was about to be dropped from her record label, because her last album (some people didn't even know she had an album after her 1st one) didn't do so well, she came out with this totally new image, sound and look, nothing like she used to. Why? To get her label to back her up and they did. it might not be her style, but she wants to keep her record deal.

Back in the day, record labels sold MUSIC. They didn't sell image and all that mess like they do now. If they see a hot looking girl with a body, she don't have to be able to sing or have writing skills. All she has to do is dance and not wear clothes. Record labels think the public is so stupid that the only music that sells is watered down crap with a hot beat (used over and over and over again)and video.

What I do is research to find a good artist that isn't mainstream by word of mouth. Problem is, that is hard to do. I feel your frustration, and so does the public. Record sales have gone down alot because of this "record label mentality" thinking the public doesn't appreciate good music without the "frills". Obviously, other people feel the same way you do, so they just listen to older music. Some say it is because of piracy, but I listened to a record exec on the radio who even said the reason sales are down is because alot of music doesn't have quality like it did back in the day. The good artists are out there, they just aren't getting signed. Most of them are not willing to "sell their souls" persay, so they just don't get heard. Sad isn't it. :(

Dunno about the seventies, that was pants for music too. I agree with you about the 60's though. There are some good bands around nowadays, sadly, like always they rarely make the charts, or if they do you can guarantee they'll never make Number 1. I'm particulary fond of "The Coral" for example. They are really a bunch of talented musicians, especially as they are only in their early 20's.

Sadly, there is a lot of pish around too & to be honest I don't know who buys it. I reckon it's the music companies that buy loads of copies of things to get them into the charts.

Music today is just a load of cover versions or songs ripping off samples from older, better ones.

I think a lot of it has to do with saturation.

With the internet and I-Pods, CD-burners...etc.. there's just more music available today, So yes, there is also going to be more crap.

There are not too many radio stations now that will take chances...unless it's a satellite radio show, you're gonna hear crap most of the time.

There is good music out there...you just have to put on the hip length boots and wade through the crap to be able to find something worthwhile.

Radio and tv have way too much influence over our culture and that includes the music we listen to (an what many are brainwashed into believing is good).

There is plenty of good new music out there, however. You just have to look really hard to find it. I listen to mostly indie music and a huge mix of different artists that people may or may not heard of. I find entire albums nearly extinct, but a few great songs here and there make for some extraordinarily great mixed cds (even just 2007 releases!)

The good news is that several different genres are all currently on the verge of a potential rebound from the bottomless pit that was the late 90s-early 00's. Here's to a good '07.

For metal it took a revival of 90s bands and will continue through 2007 (Metallica and NIN for example).

Hip Hop is actually loosing a lot of its hold over the scene, too much overplay and repeated beats. Fans need to hold out that Kanye West's new album revives the genre. It will move units, but will it hold musically to what hip hop can be?

Rock is being held up by the Chili Peppers (who never cease to be creative). The Fratellis made an entire album of great stuff. Muse is an amazing band musically with interesting concepts and sureal lyrics. Currently the best band in the world (in my opinion!) My Chemical Romance got heavier and never sounded better - House of Wolves is a super track. 2007 releases by (a heavier)Linkin Park and the Smashing Pumpkins look to put rock on top of all other genres in sales and talent.

Pop - look for British artists like Joss Stone, Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and Natasha Bedinfield to give us fresh new pop music. Bedinfields new album is full of cheeky lyrics set to poppy tunes made for summertime. Winehouse is a critics darling with a drinking problem, heavy eyeliner, sleeves of tatoos and the voice of Ella Fitzgerald. Let's just hope we can go a bit longer without Britney Spears and hope that Nickelback gets swallowed by a blackhole.

No, my friend. You got a point! Music today is so full of s--t that it makes no sense to turn on the radio because all you hear are the same 10 songs over and over again! Back then, rap was real strong and so was R&B. Now, it's totally weak. I remember when music used to be about something, now you got artists who only make music for the $ and nothing else. They don't care about the quality of the music that they put out there for the consumer to purchase.

I'm split on this issue. A lot of music is very good nowadays. These artists are harder to find of course. Most mainstream stuff isn't very good anymore, but then again who wants to conform?

I listen to different genres of music when the one I generally like isn't doing so hot.

The 60's and 70's saw an explosion of truly new music. Unfortunately, this means it's harder to get a unique sound for newer bands, as alot of the sound has already been done.

With that said, I would suggest that you start branching off in styles that you wouldn't readily listen to.

with me i dont allow ppl to make that decision for me..usually if someone says this album was bad, this was horrible, i tend to want to find out myself, so i go against the grain...for example with lady sovereign...nobody seems to like her, but i in fact bought her album, and i love it! some oldies are always going to be good, but some music nowadays is also great to listen to too..it all depends on what satisfies ur ears:)
