Hi. There are some free programs such as "Sure Delete" that will do a military style erase. http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,22393-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html

Not sure if it works perfectly but i have had luck with erasing the data then writing over the spot with new data erasing that and doing it again. I have never found an unerase program that could recover the data after doing that a few times.

Eraser, its a file shredding program that overwrites files with random data so their impossible to recover. its also most likely the smallest(in size) and easiest program to use for the job out there.
(also its free and not from an shady sites)
to download just go to: http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/download.php
and download eraser 5.82

There are a few programs out there that will do this for you but, in my opinion, one of the best is Evidence Eliminator. It's not free but it's definitely worth the $$.
