If you are looking just at financial stats and you take all taxes into account (income, property, "sin" taxes on alcohol/cigs, and sales tax), then Alabama is the best state to live in according to an article I read--I think in Money Magazine.

But I moved from AL to live in TX, which is one of the 7 states where you don't pay income taxes, and i LOVE it. Property taxes can get pretty steep, but especially if you rent, this is the place to be. Plus tax laws are really favorable for businesses, so they attract a lot of good companies; there's a great job market in this growing state. It's beautiful, warm, and there's as much to do as in any other big city, but there's that southern hospitality and charm and sense of community too.

Plus cost of living is very competitive, especially compared to other urban areas like NY, Chicago, and LA (I live in Dallas). I'm a recent college grad and I can afford to shop, go out whenever, and I just bought a condo and a car within the last year. My friends who live in NY are struggling just to eat and pay rent!

No...don't come to Georgia...it sucks!!! (actually I just don't want more people here :o) But, in all seriousness....I honestly don't think you can beat North Georgia. Especially once you live here and hike down Tallulah Gorge bright and early and take a swim in the freezing water at sliding rock...get out, drink coffee from a thermos and look at the rising sun over the gorge. AWESOME!! I love Georgia!
