look at who they cater to. Fat, lazy people who don't care about their future health. I do not eat in them, and haven't for over 20 years. I fix all of my meals homemade, with quality ingredients. My 12 year old daughter, literally gags if she smells cooking smells from a fast food place. They are serving up "foods" full of artificial ingreients, preservatives, chemicals, etc. If you want an eye opener, go to McDonalds website and look at the ingredients. One burger, with an order of fries and a soft drink gives you over 1000 chemicals and preservatives. Common sense says a french fry should contain 3 ingredients-potato, oil, salt. Here are the ingredients in a McDonalds fry
French Fries:
Potatoes, vegetable oil (partially hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor (wheat and milk derivatives)*, citric acid (preservative), dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain color), dimethylpolysiloxane (antifoaming agent)), salt. Prepared in vegetable oil ((may contain one of the following: Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, partially hydrogenated corn oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to preserve freshness), dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent). *CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK (Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients.)
Ketchup Packet:
Tomato concentrate from red ripe tomatoes, distilled vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, water, corn syrup, salt, natural flavors (vegetable source).
Salt Packet:
Table salt.
Salt
Again, common sense says the body has no idea how to process these foreign ingredients. Its a shame more people aren't aware of whats really in there. McDonalds uses a filler made from worms in there stuff, and red food color comes from crushed red beatles.

Because more people feel that they have less time for cooking actual meals, along with the fact that fast food is often cheap.
Most fast food restaurants offer things like Value Meals and Dollar Menus. The funny thing is that the Value menu was originally intended to make people think they were getting a great deal and just have them buy more and more.
It may be cheap, but there is no nutritional value at all.

You have asked two distinct questions the answers to them may or may not be related.
For example, I like to eat fast food. What I like and what I do are different. I am diabetic and the carbohydrate count on most fast food is through the roof. So while I like fast food, I do very little to support it. I can't be a significant factor in their success.
Now, to address their success. I can't speak for the World but in the United States more than a few citizens are in a hurry all the time. There is minute rice, instant pudding, fast photo and just try to drive the speed limit, the list is virtually endless. HeII, we make instant coffee in a microwave oven, what does that say? Based on that, I can't see any way "fast" food could possibly fail.

Fast food restaurants are usually cheap and easy. The American lifestyle is hectic and families rarely have the time to eat together. Fast food provides an excellent alternative to the family dinner. Fast food has become popular worldwide due, in part, to its success in America. In other cultures, it is considered a treat, even a delicacy. Some countries, like Japan, that tend to follow western trends have adopted fast food primarily because it is western. In fact, the Japanese business man who introduced McDonald's to Japan swore that it would turn Japanese skin white and their hair blond. Believe it or not, this was a major selling point for the product.
I personally dislike most fast food. All the grease and salt tends to make me sick to my stomach.
I suggest taking a look at Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation" or watching Morgan Spurlock's documentary "Supersize Me". They are both great sources of information on this particular subject.

As an American I can safely say with confidence that American culture is responsible for spreading fast food around the world. However, franchised food establishments are not necessarily an American phenomenon, and also not all of it is unhealthy.
People should know that it's not a food you eat every day, but as a convenience. Fast food should never make up more than 5% of your yearly diet.
I probably ate fast food 10 times in all of 2006, and noone of the places I went to were McDonalds, or the typical fast food places.
I prefer to cook, I was not raised from a child to make fast food part of my daily diet, and therefore, I do not actively seek fast food to eat.

Success of fast food is due to the fact that many Americans have the craving for food, lots of it, and fast. As we all know, America is overweight, due to fast food, and many other components. Also, America is a very busy nation, after work you want to get home as fast as you can, so you go to a drive-thru. Another factor, is lunchbreaks, many times emplyees aren't given much time to eat, so they go to fast food restauraunts. I personally do not enjoy going to fast food restauraunts, often. Every once in a while it's okay, but if you eat too much of it, you'll have a horrible lifestyle ahead of you.
hope this helps

It's quick, easy, sometimes cheap, and tasty. A lot of people are addicted to it. And American's are always in too much of a hurry to make food themselves, so they'll go to the drive through and eat on the go.
I like fast food, but I try not to eat it that often. I used to work at McDonalds, so I don't eat there anymore. Now I know what the food looks like before it's cooked, how it's cooked, and how long it sits there before I eat it. So now if I go to fast food places I ask for all my food fresh before I order. If they say it was just made (it's all lies!) I tell them I want it fresh anyway....to make a new batch. I'm one of those fast food go-ers that fast food workers hate. lol. I used to hate people like me when I worked there.

I'd put advertising at the top of the list, then convenience.
I do enjoy going to a fast food restaurant because I only go once every three to four months, if that. So for me, it's a treat.

The name says it all, fast food. Because of today's fast paced cultures and time constraints, people gravitate to fast foods. The food is designed to taste good even though, in most cases, it is not very healthy. I personally try to avoid fast foods, although I must admit that I do on occasion indulge.

Because people like things fast and easy even if it's not the best for them. Personally, I despise them. I worked in one for a few years in high school. I very Very rarely eat at a fast food joint. They're unhealthy.
