Looking for a quick escape this summer, but get flustered thinking about a looooong drive with 3 kids. Any suggestions? Want a good affordable beachfront place. Hotel or house rental, whatever. Just as long as it is a short drive and affordable.

As for an ocean front place close, Biloxi, MS is going to be your closest. Virginia Beach, VA runs a close second. With either of these, you're looking at 500 to 700 mile drive.

Chicago with Lake Michigan, almost an ocean, is under 300 miles. You wouldn't have to do Chicago it's self, just try to the East or North, same water. Look into Michigan City, Indiana, my wife grew up there and all she can talk about is how "Great" the "Beach" was.

Charleston is not correct! Mobile, AL is much closer! And has nicer beaches as well. Another option would be Gulfport, MS. OK, so the guy above wants to get technical - then let's say Dauphin Island, which is a few miles from Mobile. It's still 150 miles closer to St. Louis than Charleston! There are literally hundreds of places closer than Charleston!

How about at the Lake Of The Ozarks 4 hours from the city or Straight down I-55 to New Orleans but swing a little east to Mobile AL or Boluxia MS Much better territory not that much farther. These are 12-18 hours drive time. Or you could take the Train or Bus if you didn't want to drive.

Well depending on the age of the children but I would say Wilmington NC it is about 16 hours from Southwest MO so it should be able 4 hours shorter for you or maybe Virginia beach. You are going to want to make sure that there are other things to do there besides just the beach. There are battlefields, Botanical Gardens the beach, and a wonderful Aquarium in Willimington.. I use to live there.. And it wan't that bad of a drive..

Gulf Shores in Alabama

Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Dauphin Island all beaches in Alabama that would be close. (Damage from IVAN would be a consideration, but that was 2 1/2 years ago... Katrina wouldn't have affected them as much.)

Also, Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach (my favorite... no teenie bopper girls in skimpy outfits! and no crowds!), Fort Walton Beach, or Destin all in Florida... They are nice too!!!
