A new breakthrough in solar/hydrogen power from an Australian University http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/08/040825094820.htm
has the potential to make solar energy a major element of our power needs (currently solar energy is inefficient and expensive).
But that this would make Africa rich is unlikely. Sunlight is abundant in a lot of places other than the major African deserts, and unlike oil, solar energy is not easily transportable.

Gosh, 'Bill Mc' (the first poster) is not only prescient and can see the future flawlessly, but he is ALSO apparently unaware that Africa is neither a nation nor a country, but instead a continent with various countries at various levels of sophistication. It must be great to know nothing and think you know everything, huh?
ANY country or area dominated by large amounts of land that get large amounts of intense, direct sunlight would benefit from solar power when it becomes inexpensive and efficient enough to be widely used.

Interesting thought. Solar power is going to help Africa tremendously.
I doubt they'll be the "world's energy kingdoms"--but I'd love to watch all the racists die of apoplexy if they did! :)
