In Ontario Canada, they are banning cellphones in schools. I guess 70 % of parents feel they are a nuisence in the classroom. How do you folks feel about this topic?

Ok the results were in the Kingston Whig Standard, they were against cell phone use. The person at the bottom is wrong.

My sons school has banned them, they were starting to ring in the middle of class. The principle also did not want the liability if the phone gets lost or another student stole them.

To David, ( guy at the bottom). It is actually a real problem here in Ontario. Some parents have actually tried to sue schools because their child`s cellphone has been lost or stolen. Sad, but true. Why would you trust your child with a cellphone? I don`t even send my seven year old child to school with toys, I know he will loose them.

I feel that kids should get a cell phone when the parents/guardians are confident that it would be used for the "right" reasons. If you have an active child who needs to stay after school for activities or is involved in extracurricular activities, then perhaps they need one. Otherwise, save the money for something else. As a school teacher I see too many phones get "lost" or stolen and parents have to foot the bill, again and again for replacements.

I think it’s pretty funny that this discussion is even necessary (although I enjoy reading the responses). Of course children in elementary school should NOT have cell phones. The groups that say that children of this age should have them are probably working for the cell phone companies, or they have a lot of stock in them. As an elementary student the level of fiscal responsibility, and for that matter, responsibility in general, is very low. These children are going to school to learn the basic educational ideas at this age. To complicate the issue by adding multiple levels of required understanding takes away from the elementary school education. Even though I feel that children of this age are capable of learning way more than is provided at school they should be playing on the swing set when they aren’t learning math – not talking on their cell phone. (Just my two cents).

There are certain kinds of cellphones that allow kids only to be able to call home and other programmed-in numbers, and often a GPS tracker, so that the parents can stay in communication with the kids. I don't have a problem with kids having those. But regular cell phones? Kids don't need those.

Well, considering how many people are still alive who lived during those ancient pre cell phone days.... i dont think its necessary for the little ones to have a cell phone AT All. We didnt have them when we were kids, we talked to our friends when we got home. And we walked back home to check in at a certain time. And the parents watched all the kids as they walked to school. The schools have the numbers to reach parents in case of emergency, their friends are all in school, so who would they be talking to anyway? and aside from the school issue, the only safety need i see for it is if you drive, which they dont.

They are a distraction in the classroom, and elementary school kids do not need phones. They can't drive, they don't have friends who can drive. And elementary kid's parent should always know where they are and should have the nuembers of all their friend's parents in case of emergency.

They are. Plus, what is going to be so important that the child can't use a school phone or wait a few hours?

This morning on the radio on the drive to work this was the question, and 70% of callers said they SHOULD have them. And I agree. It's good for safety and communication. They DON'T need to have cameras though, because I heard they were used to pics of tests. But all shouldn't suffer because of what some do.

People cannot be serious. 4th graders or lower have absolutely no need for a cell phone. Hell I don't have a need for a cell phone and I am 34.

we don't think so, our 5th grader keeps asking for one but we drop her off and pick her up from school and mom shapirones for school trips so we don't see a need for her to have one yet.
