We really cannot.

Either the govt needs to step in and force them to act a certain way, or we as consumers need to send a message by refusing to buy from companies that don't act they way we like.

Either way, it affects the company's profit margin.

Pressure from the stockholders would probably be the most effective means. People like to gripe and complain about big business and how they're doing so many things wrong like not being environmentally conscious or grossly overpaying their top executives, but why should the government intervene when people can vote with their dollars? If consumers stop buying what they're selling or start dumping their stock, the folks at the CEO level will stand up and take notice.

This has absolutely nothing to do with appealing to their ethical or moral interest, and, although a financial interest is very important to them, all of this doesn't even have as much to do with a financial interest as it does with the "good ol' boys network. You gotta get people out of office who support big business regardless of what it does to our planet and get more people in there who care more about our planet than making money. You have to have leaders who will not tolerate this. And we are good luck on ever finding enough elected individuals who are willing to play this game. Now, all politics aside, and I do mean this, people like Bush support oil and gas and any big business that makes money with no regard to the environment. If we had more people like Gore, democrat or republican, I don't care, who, obviously are truly interested in and are speaking out publically, on what we are doing to our earth, then and only then will we find corporations wanting to do something about how they do business.

So you think it's OK they make a profit by destroying our environment??? I think if they can't make their product without destroying the environment then DON'T MAKE THE PRODUCT!!! If my business blew smoke in your face everyday, would be satisfied for me to cut down so I could continue making a profit, or would you want me to quit all together??? These corporations make so much money and yet they aren't willing to make any changes unless forced and then want the gov. to help them pay for it!!! SCREW THE CORPORATIONS!!! THEN WHEN WE DO MAKE LAWS TO FORCE THEM, THEY PUT THEIR PEOPLE IN THE GOVERNMENT TO REWRITE THE LAWS IN THEIR FAVOR!!! F U C K THE CORPORATIONS!!! BASTARDS!!!

Give them a deadline and encourage them to switch products or upgrade their machinery and stuff to less polluting methods. To convert their factory or whatever to something less polluting so they can still make money.

Write to them. Tell them you will not buy their product. Suggest an alternative. Write to your government representative. Remember it's the consumer that controls supply and demand. Cosumer demands more : manufacturere produces more. Tell your friends and family what you have found out. Ask them to join you in effecting change.
