I have family there and my mom was from there. I often wonder what it is like there now. Anyone know?

Cuba is a friendly place. People talk to each other on the street and children are treasured. Babies are carried in their mother' arms and admired all the time.

The infra structure is not in good condition but people have a basic standard of living. North Americans quote a few dollars as a weekly income but they forget that the exchange rate means that life is more affordable than you might think from the North american press.

However, there is universal medicare, including glasses and teeth. Anyone who can pass the exams can study up to a PhD for free. Students help in the community, for example, checking on shut-ins. There is a college for students from the third world to study medicine on full scholarship.

If you wonder how it feels to live in Cuba, look around your home and imagine it without any imports, food, clothing or household items. Imagine that your child needed a heart pacemaker and couldn't get it because it cannot be imported.

The image of Cuba that is depicted in the media is for the most part false. There are going to be some surprises when the country opens up eventually.

The world best health system for its people. Evey people in the world want the health system that Cuba has from their own government. Damn the HMO.

I think of it as a country with great potential held back developmentally by a ridiculous grudge. I know Fidel does some things that aren't quite warm and fuzzy, but somehow I can't help but root for him. Don't tell your Mom. ;)

I know that people in Cuba don't have any pools, cause everyone who could swim is already in US. :)

well in my country cuba is the home of drugs and the symbol of rich people who are getting richer and richer from the drug.....no offense
