Trees grow from the buds outward. In other words, where a bud forms, the growth occurs at the tips of the branches as they develop from those buds. Branches and trunk increase in girth (thickness) but their length and position remains relatively constant except at the ends where the growth occurs, or where buds form and create new branches.
Think about this. If the trunk continued to get taller from the bottom up, fruit farmers would have a difficult time picking their fruit after the tree got very old since the lowest branches would continue to get higher off the ground. Doesn't happen that way. I know, I grew up on an apple orchard.
Put your bird box where you want it, and it will pretty much stay put (very minimal change which you'll hardly notice). Just remember that the branch you attach it too will continue to get bigger around. Don't put anything around the branches, or you will cut off their circulation and kill the branch when it gets bigger.

The bird box will still be in the same position, for the information of some of the answers that disagree I would suggest that they go to an old wooded area and check the tree trunks for romantic carvings of " I love Mary 1955" etc. Proof !!!

I know that pine trees grow from the top, so if its a pine, the bird box will stay in the same place. Do some research on the type of tree, cuz I think they're all different.

A tree must grow from both...... I new maple seed started to grow in some dirt in a garbage can of mine. The truck was four inches high. It had four little branches on it. I have NEVER seen a full grown maple tree with a four inch high trunk. Therefore they must grow from both.

trees grow from the apics of the meristem or buds like karl suggested.trees and plants are very unique in the way they grow if you think about it.if you get a chance look up apical meristematic tissue.it does more than just grow,it also produces a hormone that keeps dormet buds dormet. this is what makes a house plant bush out when you trim off the tips .to answer your guestion the bird box will move up slighty, but will also move clockwise if you had a hundred years or so to watch it !!
