You can do a port scan on your home network and this will tell you what it open to hackers.

A cable modem has Firmware that's installed (Static memory chip) and can't be infected by a virus unless you flash the firmware with an infected file! And NO you can't scan your cable modem for viruses.

No viruses known to man exist in a cable modem.Maybe on it if so wipe down completly with Lysol.

No, and you do not need to. Cable modems are not suseptable to viruses.

No, all you need to be doing is scanning your pc, running current antivirus,spyware and a firewall and you should be good.
