I wash my pillows once a year and replace any that don't make it through the ordeal. There are always a few that don't.

Depends on the type pillow and the person using and caring for them. My husband sweats so pillows must be washed often. The down doesn't get as stinky as quickly, so they last over a year, oven 2-3 years. Synthetic last a year.

Person who mentioned wet hair is right, that really speeds up the problems as well as the staining. Even with two pillow cases, I've ruined more than a few pillows.

Also supportive pillows break down after a year or so. I read somewhere pillows should be replaced every 6 months. That seemed excessive.

We don't have dust mites, but if you do, perhaps every six months isn't such a bad idea. Would help with allergies.

Pillows usually last for a very long time. (I have one I've had for about 5 years) But, when the stuffing begins coming out or the seams tear, it's time for a new one. Keeping pillow cases on at all times will prolong their life (since you can wash the pillowcase and not the pillow itself), and not going to bed with wet hair will also keep them alive longer. (Wetness seeps into the pillow and can cause mildew problems) It also depends on the type of pillow you get (feather, cotton, etc.) I would recommend getting a moderately priced one (cheaper ones get flat pretty quickly) and keeping it clean and dry. Good luck:-))

If you fold your pillows in half and they do not unfold on their own, it is time for new pillows.
