The oldest player to play in the NHL was Gordie Howe. His final season in the NHL was with the Hartford Whalers in the 1979-80 at the age of 51. He is also the only player to play professional hockey in six different decades (40s - 90s). He played in one shift for the Detroit Vipers of the IHL in 1997 for first shift (was at that game).

I think it was Gordie Howe when he played for the Hartford Whalers at the age of 51. He also played for 40 seconds with the Detroit Vipers of the now defunct IHL at the age of 70.

And for the guy who said he could kick our butts, he could and he's just 78 (closing in on 79).

Not too long ago a minor league team allowed Gordie Howe to play a few seconds. I realize you asked NHL, but since it was a team affiliated with NHL they added it to his stats.

He was, perhaps, 60 years old at the time.

My guess is Gordie Howe at age 48, but that is a guess. He was awesome even in those years.
