I have ornamental grass in my landscaping. A friend of mine told me that I was supposed to cut it back when it died before winter, but I never did. Will it grow back even though I didnt cut it? Will it help to cut it now?

Ornamental grasses may be cut back either in late fall, or early spring. It isn't necessary, but it helps to clean them up so they look nicer. I like to leave mine until spring so they can add to the interest in my landscaping during the winter months.

It should start sending out green shoots from the roots soon if it hasn't already. Mine are already several inches high (Zone 6b). I still need to get out and trim mine back before they get too much growth on them. Like your lawn grass, they will still grow if you trim off some of the new growth (but don't wait too long) so don't worry about killing it if it's already growing and you nip the ends a little. You can cut them back to just above the ground level if you want to, it keeps them a little more tidy that way.

There are certain ornamental grasses that act as annuals in more cooler Zones. Hope you didn't get one of those ones if you're in Zone 6 or lower, but probably not. Give it a while longer before you need to worry about them not growing yet if they haven't. It may still be too early for your area.

Which variety are they and which zone are you in?

Yes, it will grow back even though you didn't cut it. I have an ornamental grass that I have done both ways: cut back in the fall or left uncut, and it has grown back both times. I have even left it over the winter and then cut it back in the spring, without any harm to it. It just looks tidier to cut back the dead growth before the new growth starts.

I have some tiger grass or whatever else it may be called and I cut it down when it gets too tall. It always comes back!! I would call a herbologist or a landscaping company.

Yes, it will do much better if you do, cut it to about three or four inches from the ground, be careful not to cut any new growth...
