This is a brief but strong essay on the way Tolstoy views warfare.
War and Peace, as Ekirch points out, is a postwar reflection on the Napoleonic Wars. While Ekirch addresses Tolstoy’s disdain towards the leaders of the Napoleonic Wars, he mainly focuses on Tolstoy’s emphasis on the individual will in combat. He explains that the mass of individual wills is what drives war, as opposed to leaders who will receive the historical credit. Arthur A. Ekirch Jr. was a professor of History at the State University of New York. He also authored ten books and over a hundred book reviews.
