It records and saves all the keys you typed in with your keyboard. It can be used to watch what children are typing (IRC, webpages) but it can also be used at work to monitor the employees or even to retrieve passwords.

As noted in the other answers, a key logger records the keys you type on the keyboard. They usually then share that information with the person who installed the key logger on your computer. This means that the person can see your user names, passwords and anything else you type on the keyboard.
There are two types of key loggers--hardware and software. With the hardware type, someone would actually have to install it on your machine for you to be infected. They used to be large devices that were easy to spot, but now they can be small boards installed inside your keyboard. If you suspect you have a hardware keylogger, take you computer to someone who knows what to look for and have them remove it.
As for software key loggers, you get them the same way you get any virus or malware: email, downloaded programs, instant messages, and / or infected websites. A good anti-virus should find such key loggers and remove them, or give you instructions on how to remove them.
If you have a key logger on your system, remove it. Then, immediately change *every* login and password you use, include your email accounts. If you type other information, such as social securtiy numbers or account numbers, you should look into identy theft resources, at a site such as www.identitytheft.org. Enter the term "identy theft" in any search engine and you should get lots of resources. Sites ending in .gov or .org will probably have the best information.
One more thing, if anyone else uses you compter tell they about the key logger. Their information may have been compromised as well.

I used it on. i have realized that once you scent smoke, theres a hearth. Your senses are consistently extra valuable than a key logger. yet i did not say you may no longer make certain your senses:) only be waiting for the consequences. AND what you're keen to do about them. solid success.

A keylogger is similar to any other spyware/adware/virus as far as how you get infected with it. Depending on what email client you use, yes you could possibly get it by just reading the email.
It logs your keystrokes and sends them to a predetermined host. This can log usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, social security number... you get the picture.
Most virus and spyware scanners look for this type of program, so make sure you scan your computer thoroughly.
