Your question has very little to do with available hard drive space. The problem is with the programs running in the background and the RAM usage. First go to Start > Programs > accessories > system tools > system info. Look at your available RAM (not total) If this is not over 300 MB then there is a problem that needs fixing. Over time you get too many programs running in the background and at start up. Do you have a digital camera hooked up? -- If so they often run in the background and slow a computer -- Are you running spy-ware? I only use Zone Alarm (firewall) and Avg (anti-virus) to protect my computer (in the background) and run Ad-aware every week. You may have too many services running from Norton in the background. This is just a small piece of the solution. Many things can slow a computer (peer ware, CD burning and many more) you really need to get out on the Internet and do some research or have a friend who is good (make sure he/she is good) clean up your computer. I could go on and on and I have a list of maintenance that I use, but if you do not know what you're doing you can delete the wrong stuff. Start where I told you and get deeper and deeper and your computer will reward you with more speed
start with
- empty recycle bin and change history settings to min
- delete cookies and internet temp files
- Delete other temp files (use internet to find) they are everywhere
- Delete unneeded programs (control panel (add/remove))
- turn off unneeded windows services (same place as above)
- empty recycle bin
- defrag hard drive
- Run reg machanic (not the free scan) buy it or borrow for 1 use - Unload when done.
- Clean out the items that run at start up (check internet for how) msconfig will help.
- Install and run Ad-aware (when done be sure its not running in background (settings)
------ Computer maintenance is a big involved process that most people just ignore -- they don't want to pay to keep it running clean -- They just blame a virus, spyware or an outdated computer.

u could do a disk defragment
it will organize all ur files on ur hard drive
and make it alittle faster
or u could have viruses on ur computer that would slow it down so just do a virus scan and delet out all the viruses
or u could try deleting some file u do not need
or reinstall the operating system
and start over completely wipeing out all ur files
or if u leave programs running on another user that is still logged on while ur on another user could slow it down
and u could also try deleting ur cookies and search history

Try stopping your norton antivirus scan and check the speed of your computer at that point. It may be a continual check that is draining the memory. sometimes it is better to do manual scans.. I'm not sure if this will help, but it will help narrow down what the issue is.

Reformat your computer. I make a habit of doing mine every 3 months. Clutter does build up, and a clean wipe works best.
