i guess that makes me one lousy "painter", right? i can do a nice job if I have the object/model in front of me but not if I can't see its features, etc..and isn't that what truly makes you a painter?

thanx

Maybe, but I know if you practice alot then you can get better and I know alot of artists in the past have done that, they just kept getting better. I have to also look at stuff or I can't do a dang thing worth anything cuz my head just don't work that well with hand eye coordnation and drawing out of my own head.

This answer may be unconventional, but I assure you it will work. There is a meditative practice that helps you improve your visualization abilities. You start by studying an object and its details. When you are ready you sit comfortable and close your eyes and take even breaths through your nose. Try to visualize the object you studied in every detail you remember. Concentrate only on visualizing the object, do not follow stray thoughts longer then it takes to realize you are doing so. When you are satisfied you can no longer improve the detail of your visualized object, open your eyes and look at your object. You will undoubtedly notice something you did not visualize. Now do the practice again, this time including the new feature. Repeat this as necessary (don't get too carried away, especially at first. Take breaks now and then). This will help you develop your visualization skills. Hope it helps!

All the great artists, whether paint or sculture have models on hand to provide the basic form of a work of art. The details are inserted by the artist according to his dreams and ideas.

If you can't draw or paint from memory, you lack visualization skills which are an extension of creativity. The good/bad thing is, you don't need to be creative to be a successful artist! Many artists paint from photographs, and photography itself can be considered an art.

You have to feel the soul of what you are painting, you have to become what you are painting. You have to picture it in your mind and you have to feel its soul, you have to become it.
