Honestly your better off staying away. Cavaliers were ment to be throw-away cars. But if your still intent on getting it your looking at minimum pulling the valve covers and retorquing the rocker arms or replace the springs. If that doenst fix your lifter noise youll have to pull the head and replace the lifters. If you plan on doing this make sure you have plenty of time as this could turn out to be a weekend affair. Also since its 10 years old your most likely looking at high milage on the entire vehicle. Go ahead get the transmission flushed and filter replaced if its an automatic, fuel filter replaced, injectors cleaned, oil changed and filter replaced, radiator flushed, pull the spark plugs and if you have to replace one go ahead and replace the set, and check the plug wires and replace those too if you need to, check the brakes as some people amazingly enough let these things go. Also go ahead and bleed the brakes yourself and check the brake lines for wear and tear, I've seen on more than one occasion where these have gone out due to wear. Check the belt and tires as well. Some people may call this a bit overboard but when your buying a used car you never know when these things were last taken care of and even if all of these things dont need to be replaced youll have peace of mind knowing that you at least checked.
Also if your near the area you are purchasing the car ask to take it to the nearest chevy dealership yourself and have it checked over. it might be worth the extra money to have it looked at just incase something else is severly wrong with the vehicle. Plus they will also be able to give you an estimate on how much its going to cost to get it repaired. And if the owner doesnt want you to take it to a shop then Id walk away from the deal.
