thats a problem... I think it's possible just don't know how... maybe if you don't open iTunes ...
try to look on iPod support forums there are plenty clever people there... my 80 gb ipod froze and i though i just lost £279 but thanks to about 2 hours of different methods suggested on different forums i got it working again... and 20 hours without recharging is such a bullshit isn't it?

Yes, in the options on iTunes you say that music from iPod overrides the songs in iTunes(its a check box). I cant tell you exactly how to get there but it is very simple to find the sync preferences. Good Luck

Download a piece of software called "iDump" from www.download.com . Install it on your computer before installing iTunes.
Use iDump to copy all of your music into your computers "My music" folder. Install iTunes and then associate your "My Music" folder with iTunes from the "Files" option. Connect up your iPod and install it into iTunes.

When finished, find the install folder for iDump from within "C" Drive. Copy the iDump.exe file into the Root of your iPod. Now whenever at a friends, you can "borrow" some music using iDump or "lend" a track or two!. You can also share a copy of the iDump.exe file with your friends so they can have the benefit also.

just plug your iPod to your PC then navigate thrugh the my computer menu to the iPod icon, double click on it and find the folder called music, select that folder copy it and then paste it under my music folder.

open the folder with windows media player, go to tools and select apply changes to media files so the player will rename the songs according to their data base.
