Familiarity with the terrain, supply lines (the Confederacy had food at hand), and local support and loyalty from the Southern people where the battles were being waged are three that leap to mind..

Their disadvantage was location. They had to travel to get to the fight. Many Southern fighters were trained in the North. The South also had a military tradition that encouraged young men to serve in the armed forces or attend a military school; many had served the U.S. military prior to the Civil War, only to resign and fight for their states and family. In addition, the South had the leadership of great commanders, including Robert E. Lee, Joseph Johnston, and "Stonewall" Jackson.

I know for sure, i did this last year.
1) The North had to travel to the south so that means they had to go there the South had a location advantage. By the time the North got there, they were all tired so they weren't really fit to fight. All the south had to do was wait, and waiting is a lot easier then marching miles.
2)South had more experianced soldiers.

I did this a long time ago, but I don't think they were fighting on their own land?
Sorry, hope that helps =)

Okay, here's some more:
*Military colleges were primarily in the South
*Southern army didn't need to initiate military action as the North did; all they needed to do was maintain a defensive hold.
*Southerners were fighting for what they believed

the north had better weapons like machine guns and hand grenades that the south didn't have.

the blacks fought on the side of the north. they could hide in the bushes and sneak up on them southerners better.

the southerners were drinking moonshine all the time, so they couldn't shoot straight.
