well, do you have a real excuse or you just feel like skipping? don't feel much sympathy for you if you have no real reason, but if you do, just call and ask--that's all you can do--and if it's a real emergency i'm sure they would be flexible about the 8 hour rule. the most basic reason, just say you don't feel good or your car broke down or something in your house/apt broke.

I don't offer excuses. I tell them I'm sick or that I can't come in, due to circumstances. Of course, I only call off when I'm really sick or something really does come up, like my step mother having surgery. But I don't feel the need to spill my guts. Stuff happens, to everyone. It's none of their business.

tell them when you woke up and tried to lift your head it fell back down again and that you haven't gotten any better -- so you'd like to just relax, sleep and get better. or say I have really bad flu but ask if they still want you to come in -- make sure to emphasize that you'll be suffering if they make you come in -- but it will be their idea for you to stay home.

A car accident. Make sure you say you were driving with a friend and you dont think you're going to make it in time.
