I am wondering when you adopt a child from birth, as in taking the child home from the hospital with the paperwork already signed. What are the laws in regards to the birth mother changing her mind after you have taken the baby home? Can she just get custody back? Is there a statute of limitations? Any answers greatly appreciated..

The answer will vary by the state you are in and where the adoption would take place, if that is a different state. It would be helpful to provide that information for a more accurate answer.

These are matters of state statutes. If you involve an attorney or a credible agency, they should be able to tell you exactly what point the birth mother's rights to the child are terminated, and that is usually before you take the child home.

The controlling statutes will be the ones of the jurisdiction where the adoption occurs. If everyone involved is from Missouri, but they all go to Texas for the birth and adoption and seek the adoption in Texas courts, Texas law will control.

All states have different rules. If you do the adoption through a reputable agency or attorney you will minimize the liklihood of a problem.
